You will serve as a NONDESTRUCTIVE TEST INSPECTOR LEADER in the Radiography Operations Branch (Code 1353), Nondestructive Test Division (Code 135), Quality Assurance Office (Code 130) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will perform complex nondestructive testing and analysis on complex and nonroutine mech~cal components, piping systems, and structural assemblies related to Naval surface ships and submarines and nuclear propulsion plants. You will obtain and maintain qualification and certification as Industrial Radiography Radiation Safety Personnel (IRRSP) in accordance with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations. You will acquire and records test results and data using enhanced signal processing and acquisition software on state of the art computer-based platforms. You will interpret, evaluate, and analyze test results by discriminating electromagnetic signatures, waveforms, digital images, and the density of processed film, which are displayed on monitors and radiographic film or plates. You will interpret test results and determines final acceptance/rejection of items in accordance with specific codes and specifications without supervisory controls. You will perform calibration and safety checks of test equipment prior to and after performance of NDT inspections. You will conduct radiographic operations and/or serves as Radiographer-in-Charge (RIC) for nuclear and non-nuclear radiographic inspections. You will review data for complete inspection using complex software, analyze any abnormal eddy current signals, accepts/rejects the tubes based on information from the current and any prior inspections, and prepare written reports of results.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position requires that the selectee be willing and able to climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • This position requires that the selectee be willing and able to work in small and/or confined spaces.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE: Previous or current certification as an NDT inspector in the following methods: VT (Visual Inspection), PT (Liquid Penetrant Inspection), MT (Magnetic Particle Inspection) as well as one of the following major NDT methods: RT (Radiographic Inspection Level II), UT (Ultrasonic Shearwave Inspection), ET (Eddy Current Analysis Inspection), or RIC (Radiographer-In-Charge Certification); Utilizing a wide array of highly sophisticated quality control inspection/ NDT techniques; Utilizing unique and specially designed precision instruments and gauges; Interpreting complicated written technical material such as instructions, TGI's, specifications, procedures, sketches, and blueprints. Independently interpreting and analyzing inspection test results and determining final acceptance/rejection of items in accordance with specific codes. Participating in audits and preparing charts and status reports on progress while inspections are being completed.
