About the Position: The Anniston Army Depot is located in Anniston, Alabama, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain chain half way between Atlanta, Georgia, and Birmingham, Alabama, just off Interstate 20. The Depot is the largest employer in Calhoun County with approximately 4000 employees.
Duties
Serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property.
Utilizes hazardous materials response equipment and supplies including liquid splash and vapor-protective-clothing, respiratory protection equipment, dry and extinguishing chemicals, and decontamination agents and equipment.
Unreels and connects hose, lays hose lines, operates charged lines; places and raises ladders; operates portable and stationary firefighting apparatus; ventilates buildings or aircraft; administers first aid and artificial respiration.
On the scene of an emergency, incumbent has the authority to direct patient care within their scope of knowledge or direction, thereby transporting or moving patients via manner in which he deems necessary.
Rescue persons endangered by fire and reduced or eliminate potential fire hazards.
Responds to alarms and combats fire in an industrial setting requiring the full performance of a firefighting tasks involving structures, equipment, and facilities.
Provides medical care as ambulance driver/emergency medical technician.
Performs emergency procedures that are noninvasive. Performs initial and on-going focused patient assessment and determines priority of patient care based on assessment findings physical examination.
Assists in loading, transporting, and unloading the sick, injured convalescent, and deceased patients, as well as medical supplies when authorized.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must have a current Driver's License and be able to obtain and maintain a valid Government and State of Alabama Driver's License.
- This position requires the incumbent to work 144 hours bi-weekly.
- Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- This position requires you must currently possess at minimum a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Certification and within 6 months obtain, through reciprocity, a State of Alabama Emergency Medical Technician-Certification.
- The incumbent of this position must sign DA Form 5019-R as a condition of employment and shall be subject to periodic and random urinalysis drug testing as required by AR 600-85.
- This is a Mission Essential (ME) position. In the event of a crisis situation, the incumbent must continue to perform the ME duties until relieved by proper authority. Incumbent may be required to participate in readiness exercises.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes performing crash/rescue and firefighting duties controlling or extinguishing fires as member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade to determine how they affect the difficulty of rescue and fighting fires; performing basic life support determining priority of patient care based on assessment findings takes records and monitors patients baseline vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, and pulse; respond to basic hazardous incidents reacting to releases or potential releases of hazardous materials as part of the initial response to the site to protect nearby persons, property, or the environment from the effects of a release.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
NOTE: Required Certificates (You must submit copies of the required certifications with your application): In addition to the above specialized experience definition/requirement, this position requires the incumbent to possess, at the time of appointment the following certifications for the noted grades. These certifications must have been awarded by the DoD, IFSAC, or Pro-Board accredited training to meet this requirement. If you do not submit all of the above certifications with your application package, you will be rated ineligible, and your application will receive no further consideration.
Firefighter Certifications Required: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Driver Operator Pumper Certification, Hazardous Material Technician, National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)- (formally Basic) certification. The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification must be issued by State and National Registry (NREMT).
NOTE: This position has been identified by Department of Army and approved by the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness as a covered primary, rigorous position for special retirement coverage as identified in 5 CFR 831 Subpart I for CSRS Retirement coverage and 5 CFR 842 Subpart H for FERS retirement coverage. The individual hired is subject to Special Retirement provisions to include additional contributions to the retirement fund, mandatory separation/retirement at age 57 with 20 years of approved special retirement provisions service, options for early retirement at any age after 25 years of approved special retirement provisions service, or at age 50 with 20 years of approved special retirement provisions service.
Department of Defense (DoD), in accordance with 5 USC 3307, has determined an individual must be appointed to their first/original appointment into a DoD position that has been identified and approved as a primary firefighter no later than the last day of the month in which they become 37. Preference eligible veterans over the age of 37, may apply regardless of the age restriction. If selected, a waiver of the age restriction will be requested by the hiring official for approval by the Department of Army. An individual who is past the maximum entry age (37) who previously served in an approved primary position may be reinstated to a covered primary position provided they meet the applicable qualification requirements AND will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered service as a firefighter by the last day of the month in which they become 57.
The Department of Army may approve an exception to the maximum entry age (37) for the original entry of a non-veteran-preference-eligible applicant into a primary covered firefighter position. Exceptions shall be extremely rare and based only on a compelling hardship to the mission. Should an exception be granted, the employee shall be separated on the last day of the month in which he/she completes 20 years of special retirement provisions covered service.
