Investigations will typically involve violations of the Department's programs and regulations with respect to illegal transportation of hazardous materials, aviation safety, contract and grant fraud and motor carrier safety.  Results of investigations may form the basis for withholding funds from a state, criminal or civil prosecution by the Department of Justice; administrative personnel actions by DOT; or changes in practices and/or procedures by DOT.

Duties

If selected for this position, you will serve as the principal advisor to the Special Agent in-Charge and be responsible for directing and supervising a staff of criminal investigators in the accomplishment of investigative activities aimed at uncovering suspected fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in programs of the DOT as well as a variety of proactive investigations.  In addition, you will be responsible for providing professional leadership and technical and administrative supervision to subordinate employees.  You will establish and maintain liaison with officials within DOT and other federal departments; determine the scope and depth of investigations; review reports of investigations; and represent the agency in meetings.  Investigations require frequent travel and may occasionally require undercover surveillance work.

  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Pre-employment drug testing and physical exam required.
  • You will be required to serve a one year supervisory probationary period.

Qualifications

Candidates must have one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the federal service. Non-government experience should be of similar complexity. Examples of specialized experience includes: leading and/or supervising others; conducting complex and sensitive investigations with tact and discretion, securing facts and developing evidence; maintaining liaison with other law enforcement bodies; conducting investigative interviews, record searches, and obtaining sworn statements; preparing written reports of investigations and summaries.NOTE: All applicants who do not currently, or have in the past worked as a GS-1811 Criminal Investigator in a federal OIG office must clearly demonstrate in their on-line application, possession of the experience. Applicants who fail to clearly and specifically address this factor in their on-line application will not receive further consideration for the announcement.Federal Time-In-Grade (TIG) Requirement for General Schedule (GS) Positions: Applicants must have served at least 52 weeks at the GS-13 or higher grade (or equivalent in an alternate pay system) within the Federal Civil Service to be considered for referral. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.
