About the Position: The purpose of the work is to perform a full range of medical records administration tasks for outpatient medical records to resolve problems, questions, or situations; and to plan, administer and oversee the implementation of standardized management and use of medical records. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Perform a variety of duties involved with auditing, analyzing, coding, and reviewing medical data and medical records. Coordinate with clinical staff and other health care providers for the coding and timely completion of medical records. Validate diagnoses codes, procedures codes, narrative description of diagnoses and procedures, and transfer information is entered into the automated system. Assist coding-related training in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Coding Application Software. Analyze statistics on accuracy of data within individual specialties and clinics. Review information reported into data systems and provide recommendations for more efficient use of resources to medical center management. Coding education and training sessions for all providers, clinical staff, and coders. Use various computer application programs (word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics) to prepare correspondence, reports, charts and graphs.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. (NACI) (Tier 1).
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Subject to occasional Shiftwork/nights/weekends/Overtime
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • Travel overnight away from home station for Duty (TDY) may be required up to 5%.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the Education and/or Experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: providing advice on the use of medical records associate with all phases of inpatient or outpatient medical records; maintaining medical records for compliance with policies and procedures; utilizing automated medical record systems (such as GENESIS) to prepare statistical reports, documentation reviews and/or other reports for purposes of quality improvement. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Medical Records Administration or Medical Coding and Billings. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Due to the coding auditing nature of the position the incumbent must possess one of the following certifications: Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA). Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). Certified Professional Coder (CPC) (Equivalent to CCS-P and CPC-P). Certified Outpatient Coder (COC).

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
