About the Position: This position is located at Martin Army Community Hospital in Fort Benning, GA. Incumbent will be for mechanic work related to boilers and air conditioning equipment within a medical treatment facility.

Duties

Install, maintain, and repair large and complex boilers and heating plants. Perform visual and operational tests to troubleshoot and diagnose the cause of malfunction. Perform a variety of tests by using prescribed chemical reagents, color slides, and related equipment. Serve as a boiler plant operator, independently operating a large central boiler plant. Dismantle, repair, and reassemble units such as pumps, impellers, centrifugal chillers, water towers, air on heating or air equipment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position has been designated Weather Essential. In the event of inclement weather conditions the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The employee must possess and maintain a National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers (NIULP) Fourth Class Power Engineer certification within 6 to 12 months of employment.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Utility Systems Repairer-Operator ~ without more than normal supervision.I have the ability to perform common boiler/heating plant and air conditioning systems tasks including major overhaul of oil-fired installations including soot removal, replacement of filters and filter elements, cleaning and replacement of nozzles and electrodes, chemical cleaning of steel boiler waterside. I have dismantled, repaired and reassembled units such as pumps, impellers, chillers, compressors, and evaporators. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading)Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc.Knowledge of MaterialsTechnical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Use of Measuring Instruments Physical Efforts: Frequently works on ladders, scaffolding or platforms where equipment is located. Stands, stoops, kneel, bends and climbs; and works in tiring, uncomfortable positions. Regularly lifts, carries, handles and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally handles objects of heavier weight. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside, subject to all weather conditions. Exposure to almost constant high temperature from boilers. There is exposure to dirt, greasy odors, smoke, fumes and gases. Uncomfortable face masks, or respirators, and protective devices may be worn. Scalds, cuts, bruises, and broken bones my result from accidents while working around boilers and machinery and equipment.
