About the Position: The position is with Patient Administration Division, A.T. Augusta Army Medical Center, Monday-Friday. The work area is an adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated office or medical facility setting or from the coder's own home (teleworking). The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions.

Duties

Review medical records to ensure all diagnoses and procedures are properly documented and coded according to program and regulatory requirements and guidelines. Apply knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes to code medical diagnoses and procedures. Handle problems and/or deviations that arise in accordance with established policies, regulatory and administrative guidelines, directives, or instructions, referring new or controversial issues to the supervisor for direction and/or assistance. Confirm proper sequencing of diagnoses and procedures, and sufficient documentation to support the Diagnostic Related Group (DRG), inpatient and outpatient classification system assignment. Code complicated medical records that are difficult to classify. Recommend changes to the templates based on revisions/deletions to codes within coding systems, changes in coding practices or nomenclature, and changes in clinic scope of practice. Confirm proper matching of procedures to diagnoses on ambulatory records. Coordinate and provide training to physicians, medical records staff, medical records technicians, and other health care providers on issues concerning coding, sequencing of diagnoses and procedures and supporting documentation requirements. Utilize office automation systems such as: International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-CM) Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), or Ambulatory Patient Visits Coding (APV) to pull reports and verify codes for medical records. Serve as a subject matter expert in coding guidelines and educate coders, providers and other staff within the hospital of such guidelines. Review lower level employees work in progress or upon completion to ascertain problems and take corrective action. Conduct in-service training relating to coding systems for medical records technicians.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 2 security investigation or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes reviewing and analyzing medical records for coding accuracy; utilizing healthcare systems such as: Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), Diagnosis Related Group (DRG), Internal Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) for Inpatient Coding (IP), Inpatient Professional Services Rounds Coding (IPSR) or Ambulatory Patient Visits Coding (APV) to translate and code patient diagnosis/procedures; notifying supervisor or provider of discrepancies found in medical records; and advising and educating staff on required medical record documentation and/or coding requirements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree such as Health Information Management or Health Care Administration, from an accredited college or university. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: ClericalComputer SkillsData SystemsLeadershipQuality Assurance Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
