Serves as a Team Leader in the Materials and Processes Laboratory. Leads in the area of metallurgical science and failure analysis of metals and as an adviser and technical authority/consultant in the area of metallic materials and their application. The work involves developing, evaluating, selecting, and applying advanced metallurgical diagnostic methods and failure analysis techniques to aerospace metallics for spacecraft structures.

Duties

Provide expertise in the area of metallurgical science and failure analysis of metals and serve as an advisor to NASA technical authority in the selection of metallic materials in aerospace applications. Support the performance planning and appraisal process by providing feedback on performance needs and results to the Branch Chief of all team members. Keep track of all the activities within the Team and make the Branch Chief aware of any threats, obstacles or opportunities affecting team members. Oversee and lead employees performing diagnostic and analysis of metallic spacecraft hardware and developing unique methods and techniques when required to understand metallic failure modes, material properties and processes. Understand the budget process and work with Branch Chief for optimizing and balancing workforce assignments according to team member abilities and customer expectations. Maintain engineering and administrative safety protocols and provide an inclusive work environment for every team member to flourish. Mentor and coach employees. Provide individual training and engineering discipline growth planning for each team employee and advise the Branch Chief on all strategic planning for the team. Provide situational leadership to team members and provide effective conflict resolution when needed. Foster a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence and innovation. Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Providing technical guidance to a team of engineers related to an aerospace material characterization that evaluates the suitability of the material for use in propulsion, cryostorage, or any aerospace structure or subassembly, or life support systems; Designing and developing plans for technical studies to characterize a material and assess useability in an aerospace application. Augmenting the management of technical risk to the development of material dependent systems or components through the identification of potential material failure modes and providing the planning of mitigation of such failures by alternate material selection and/or material testing and characterization applied to the expected environments. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
