Duties

Leads three or more Recreation Assistants in the front desk operations and related duties. Receives, stores and a variety of recreational supplies and equipment. Collects fees for services and resale merchandise. Assists in the physical conditioning programs by demonstrating equipment, methods and procedures to be used, as well as proper safety techniques. Sets up and takes down equipment for sport programs and/or special events.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, and Technical and Medical Support Positions. GS-0189 Recreation Aid and Assistant Series. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-4, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes fitness equipment set up, adjustment, operating procedures, and required safety rules and regulations; operation of standard office equipment; customer service, monitoring customer entry, instructing in the proper conditioning and training for muscular fitness, maintaining facility requirements in fire, safety, health and cleanliness, initiating and maintaining files, and assisting the manager on duty and scheduling tasks/events. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Basic knowledge of a standardized body of rules, procedures and operations related to one or more indoor/outdoor recreation functions in order to perform the required activities in a fitness and sports environment. Basic knowledge of general office administrative and clerical procedures, and automation functions to support office operations such as answer telephone, maintain files/office forms, order supplies, operate a cash register, enter and retrieve data from a computer. A qualified typist is not required. Ability to follow written and or oral instructions. Knowledge of a full range of work processing functions and the ability to work independently with little need for direct supervision in completing the assignments involving a sequence of tasks or processes. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse group of individuals, using a high degree of tact and diplomacy. General knowledge of established safety standards and procedures. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
