This position is located within the Supply Chain Management Service within the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, IN. As a Mail Clerk you will handle all incoming and outgoing mail for the facility. See duties below for full list of job duties and responsibilities.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Incumbent is responsible for sorting incoming and outgoing mail. Responsible for metering outgoing mail timely and by cost efficient methods, determining the most efficient and correct postage rates, Utilizes the Neopost mail meter and Neotrack System to determine the most cost effective method of shipping packages, letters, certified mail, express mail, signature confirmation mail, delivery confirmation mail and other means of shipping. (USPS vs. UPS, express vs. ground vs. parcel post) Ensures that incoming public inquires and staff mail are properly opened, logged, reviewed, date stamped and sorted into established categories for distribution to appropriate departments. Manages facility tone (printer) recycling center and ensures commonly used toner cartridges are available for staff, Assists customers with packaging of large items. Provides monthly facility reports for service chief and Austin, TX. Provides superior customer service, both on the telephone and directly with customers. Complies with all regulations, policies and Joint Commission requirements. Maintains a clean, safe, work environment. Protects all data, mail and packages from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration or unauthorized deletion while following all applicable regulations and instructions. Screens and identifies suspicious mail. Reports all suspicious letters and packages to VA Police. Work Schedule: Full-Time Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4:00pm Virtual: This is not a virtual position. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/07/2024. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Skills using office automation equipment and software to enter, gather, and organize information; Operating mail processing equipment, sort/route mail, typing, and mail processing and customer service experience. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed 4 years above high school in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education was obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. If you are qualifying on education, transcripts are required. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond high school education as described above that demonstrates my ability to perform the duties of this position. Only education in excess of 60 semester hours (2 years) (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Administration and ManagementAttention to DetailCustomer Service (Clerical/Technical) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Required to lift up to 50 pounds. Work is performed while standing for extended periods of time with periodic bending, sitting, and carrying of packages.
