About the Position: Serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property. Conducts group and on-the-job training of firefighting personnel, which consists of lectures, demonstrations, and verbal or written instructions.
Duties
Plans and executes the Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Program.
Works independently in carrying out fire prevention and fire protection inspection duties.
Conducts training of firefighting personnel, which consists of lectures, demonstrations, and verbal or written instructions in the proper use of fire-fighting equipment.
Conducts training which consists of lectures, demonstrations, and verbal or written instructions in fire prevention and evacuation procedures to be followed during fire or other emergencies hazardous to personnel and property.
Plans, schedules and directs the inspection of buildings, grounds and fixed fire protection equipment.
Initiates action to correct deficiencies and/or recommend changes or additions to ensure compliance with fire prevention and protection requirements.
Develops lesson plans for training fire fighters for locally unique hazards and operations.
Serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires you to wear the prescribed uniform and personal protective equipment while on duty in compliance with safety and health directives (OSHA).
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
- Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis which includes at least one 24-hour shift with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
- This position is an Inclement Weather Essential position and maintain a functioning telephone to aid in contact during recall situations.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
- The duties of this position require you to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
- This position requires you to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
- This position requires a pre-employment physical fitness assessment and continued participation in a scheduled cardiovascular physical fitness program as directed by Army regulatory guidance.
- This position requires you to work both inside and outside with possibility exposure to inclement weather.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

Position may be filled as a time-limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) 1 year by a current permanent Army employee. Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years, however return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:
Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; rescue operations;
detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards;
operation of fire communications equipment; controlling hazardous materials incidents;
and/or Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this position, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, this position requires Department of Defense (DoD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO Board) professional certifications in accordance with the DoDM 6055.06 and position description. This position requires you to possess and maintain DoD, IFSAC, or PRO Board Firefighter I and II Certifications, Fire Inspector I and II, Hazmat Awareness, Fire Instructor I, DOD Hazardous Materials Technician certification, and a State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) License. Maximum Entry Age (MEA)
The MEA for Firefighters is 37. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 37th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions.
Maximum Re-entry Age
An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57, if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.
Waivers to Maximum Entry Age
MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by local Command.
