About the Position: This is a Supervisory Health System Specialist position located in Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Duties
Counsel military personnel from all branches of the uniformed services, retirees, and the families of those being processed through the Army Physical Disability Evaluation System (APDES) on their rights, benefits, privileges, or obligations.
Maintain and safeguard both hard copy and electronic medical information.
Provide information and advice on rights and benefits of uniformed services personnel, retired permanently or temporarily, or discharged for physical disabilities with or without severance pay, and their options.
Advise Soldier of the necessity of obtaining sufficient documentation (medical and non-medical) concerning the Soldier's ability to perform military duties and the severity of the Soldier's disease or injury.
Interpret and assist in other benefits such as vocational rehabilitation, clothing allowance, aid and attendance, prosthetics and appliances, and aid for the blind.
Communicate effectively with belligerent/angry or extremely frustrated service members, retirees, and Family members; understanding their fears and concerns and be able to obtain their confidence and trust.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent must successfully complete the 6I-F4/340-F3 Training and Certification course within 180 days of appointment and annually thereafter.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing two or more of the following: (1) analyzing Physical Evaluation Board Liaison Officer (PEBLO) and/or Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) data for trends or deviations; (2) identifying problems and recommending solutions for improvement in the PEBLO and/or MEB processes; (3) counseling military personnel and their families on the MED and/or PEBLO process such as required documentation and available benefits; briefing leadership on the MED/PEBLO processes; (4) coordinating evaluation appointments with other clinics for military personnel and their families; (5) providing leadership to subordinates to include training or workload distribution. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
