This position is located in Department of Homeland, U.S. Coast Guard, Base Boston, Facilities Engineering Department, Public Works Division, Boston, MA.

Duties

The purpose of this position is to serve as a leader and to personally perform the duties and responsibilities that require skill in multiple trades (i.e. plumbing, HVAC, boiler maintenance, and other mechanical systems).Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.Typical work assignments include:* Passing on instructions to subordinates from the supervisor, making work assignments, establishing the workflow, setting the pace for work completion and distributing and balancing the workload.* Keeping in touch with subordinates concerning the status and progress of work, makes adjustments to meet deadlines, and deals with backlogs.* Assuring written instructions and reference materials are available and followed and that safety regulations are complied with.* As qualified demonstrates proper work methods and provides technical guidance in the following areas:    - Plumbing: Performing planning, layout, and completion of installations, modifications, and repairs.    - Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning:  maintaining, troubleshooting, and adjusting systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning,             filtering, and circulating of air climate.    - Boiler maintenance:  starting, operating, adjusting stops, maintaining, and performing various repairs on single or multiple fuel power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment. 

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • The position requires a valid state driver's license.
  • Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: * Ability To Lead Or Supervise (Screen-out Element)* Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc * Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)* Use of Measuring Instruments* Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)* Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.* Knowledge of MaterialsNational Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
