This is a temporary appointment. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status and will be for a period not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year.
Duties
Duties include collecting forest and woodland management data regarding location, character, extent, volume, rate of growth, and quality of timber.
Inspect and report on timber sale areas to determine compliance with contract requirements.
Mark and designate timber to be removed in timber sales or for use disposals. Compiles maps of forest and woodland areas, cutover area, burned areas and special use areas.
Forestry Aids assist professional Foresters by gathering a variety of resource information used to prepare the forestry portion of Resource Management Planning document.
May conduct segments of forest inventories, prepare forest layouts, and execute plans for slash disposal, forest plantings, thinning and forest disease and insect control.
Forestry Aids assist with cone collection, site preparation and planting, performing reforestation stocking surveys, determining the heath of planted trees and pre-commercial thinning.

Qualifications

GS-3: 6 months of general experience working in any professional, technical, or other responsible field that provided you with a familiarity of forestry, physical science programs or techniques of collecting scientific data; OR Successful completion of 1 year of study above high school, that included at least 6 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as range management or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management, engineering, biology, mathematics or other natural or physical sciences, OR A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands/Work Environments: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking/hiking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated that may also be steep, wet and muddy. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to perform the work of the position, this includes tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods away from a vehicle. Work while in the office is performed in adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area. Fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals.
Education
Education: If this position requires specific educational course work to qualify, or you are qualifying based in whole or part on education, you are required to provide transcripts as proof of meeting the requirements.
Foreign Education: Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the specific educational requirements as stated above.
