About the Position: This position is located with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District, Operations Division, Navigation Branch, Dredge Hurley, Memphis, TN 38103. Duty location is wherever the Dredge Hurley is located.
Duties
Serves as Master of a Class I dustpan diesel electric powered pipeline dredge (18 discharge and over) engaged in river channel maintenance and/or construction dredging.
Is responsible for the vessel, machinery, tools, equipment and supplies, and attendant plant and vessels during the dredging and nondredging periods. Is on call 24 hours per day during the dredging season.
Plans for vessel staffing, operating and subsistence supplies and materials, fuel requirements, and other comparable support requirements prior to the beginning of the dredging season. Schedules and approves leave of subordinates.
Counsels employees on problems; adjusts informal complaints through discussion with employees and union representatives.
Takes informal corrective action on conduct or performance problems. Initiates proposals for disciplinary action where needed.
As necessary, stands a regular watch as a pilot during moves of the dredge.
Checks progress of dredging operations, giving due consideration to the type of material being dredged; causes of lost time; river stages; current; wind; compliance with local, state, and Federal water pollution laws, regulations, and standards.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment drug test screening and random drug and alcohol test screenings thereafter.
- Must possess a U.S. Coast Guard license Any Gross Ton Master OR as an Any Gross Ton Mate and as a Master Towing Vessel. Any Gross Ton Mate license must obtain an Any Gross Ton Master License within two years.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do supervise as a(n) Master Pipeline Dredge Class 1. Establishes deadlines and priorities; setting the dredge in position to begin operations; and stands a regular watch as a pilot during moves of the dredge.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work generally involves some physical effort with lifting up to 50 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside subjecting the employee to varying climatic conditions. Hazards encountered include falling from pipelines, falling on slippery decks or climbing steep stairways, injury from moving machinery, and the possibility of drowning in case of accident.
