This position is located in the Optometry Department at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, in Phoenix, AZ. The optometry technician serves as a front-line health care personnel; performing a combination of technical (non-professional medical) and administrative tasks related to the treatment and care of eye patients in an ambulatory environment. Incumbent performs eye care services and technical tasks for patient care and is under the direct supervision of the Chief of Optometry.
Duties
Performs intake for clinic patients, which includes obtaining an ophthalmology chief complaint and history of present illness, past ocular history, medical and surgical and social histories, review of medication list and allergies, with documentation in the Electronic Health Record.
Measures current prescriptions using the Humphrey lens analyzer, performs refractions using the Humphrey automatic refractor. Performs Humphrey visual field testing.
Performs OCT Testing (Optical Coherence Tomography) of the optic nerve and retina.
Administers diagnostic dilating drops, and other appropriate eye medications as directed.
Cleans and organizes exam rooms between patients and assist providers in the education of patients regarding disease processes and treatment regimens.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-0640-06:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Work in a medical office performing patient histories, preliminary test such as vital signs, or visual acuities, assisting provider in delivery medical treatments and entering information into an electronic health record. Is familiar with basic ocular anatomy and experience independently providing patient education on ocular conditions and treatment and transcribing eyeglass prescriptions using standard optical notation.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
