The incumbent is responsible for the direct supervision and coordination of all activities of the Mechanical Maintenance Unit. Incumbent is under the immediate supervision of the General Maintenance Foreman. Assignments are given wither verbally from his/her supervisor or through the Work Order system.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Supervises a variety of trades and is responsible for the interior/ exterior maintenance, repair and renovation of the buildings, carpentry, painting, and repair of grounds equipment and vehicles, medical air and vacuum equipment, and security (locks) needs of the Medical
Center.
Must possess knowledge of many different kinds of material trade practices, as well as complex work methods.
Observes work in progress to anticipate and resolve problems, reassigns personnel and coordinates work among employees and other supervisors to maintain work progress to meet schedules.
Will be called upon for technical advice in connection with maintenance projects, will be asked to inspect maintenance and construction projects to ensure compliance with specifications.
Must ensure the maintenance, upkeep and repair of buildings and equipment are completed in such a manner as not to impeded the total organizational function.
Responsible for establishing performance standards, initiating performance ratings, needed counseling, and recommending or initiating disciplinary action.
Incumbent is a purchase card holder and complies with all acquisition regulations, both Federal, VA and local.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm

A current, valid state issued Driver's License is required for this position. Individuals required to operate a Government-owned or -leased motor vehicle to properly carry out their assigned duties must be properly screened during the recruitment and onboarding process. Applicants must:

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This position requires walking, standing, bending, sitting, crawling and climbing. Incumbent must have good vision, with or without glasses. May lift or carry tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items over 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: Incumbent may work from ladders, scaffolding, and/or hydraulic platforms. This position requires working in uncontrolled environments, in inclement weather conditions, and in confined or uncomfortable spaces. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally is subject to possible dangerous working conditions including exposure to hazards normally encountered in the hospital trades and various types of infections. May be subject to electrical shock and/or electrical burns, cuts, bruises, and strains. Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner. Work progress, inspection, and supervision requires regular and recurring exertion including walking, standing, bending, climbing, etc. Management and administrative work is typically performed in an office setting around the Engineering environment. Incumbent must have good vision and dexterity and be able to explain complex procedures to staff.
