You will serve as a Rigger in the Lifting & Handling Department, Rigging & Eqipment Operations Division, Rigging Branch of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will apply a thorough knowledge of rigging principles and techniques to relative to lad stress and ability to move objects. You will utilize a working knowledge of submarines, and or surface ship systems, components, compartments and tanks. You will ensure all bells on cranes are operational, tracks are clear and moving and the tower and bool are before rotating or tracking the crane. You will direct the movement of portal and hammer head or mobile cranes and derricks. You will be responsible for instructing apprentice helpers, rigger workers and or riggers in assigned work.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • You will lift and/or carry loads/items up to 50 pounds in weight.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION. Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, drawings, and work orders; Experience using complex multipoint suspension techniques to permit maneuvering over and around obstacles by titling, dipping and turning the suspended loads using proper technique; Experience moving large, heavy objects in open and confined spaces; Experience planning, assembling, repairing and installing complex weight handling gear and various standing and running rigging; Experience directing cranes and operating hoists, forklifts and/ or hand trucks to handle heavier material and equipment.
