As a Supervisory AST Flight Systems Engineer (Branch Chief) with the Technical Performance and Integration Division, Exploration Systems Integration Branch, you will be responsible for policies, procedures, schedules, resources, procurement, funding, and ground systems equipment and facility requirements for the branch. You will lead a team of highly skilled multi-discipline engineers in providing Technical Integration for current (Exploration Ground Systems) and future programs and projects.

Duties

Serves as Branch Chief Exploration Systems for the Integration Branch providing leadership and coordination in the performance of activities and supervision of subordinate employees. Oversees work assignments of multi-disciplinary team in design, development, integration, test, evaluation, operation, and long-term maintenance of flight vehicles, payloads, ground systems, facilities, hardware, software, and associated systems. Responsible for advising on, coordinating, monitoring, maintaining surveillance over, supervising and/or performing a variety of engineering and integration efforts of the branch for current and future programs. Provides expertise and technical assistance on the most challenging technical problems in the aerospace engineering fields. Provides technical direction across interdisciplinary engineering teams for ground systems of aerospace vehicles or structures including production, fabrication, construction, operation, certification, and/or maintenance. Performs multiple functions which may include planning, research, design, development, test and evaluation, cost analyses, program and project management. Monitors contracted work either externally or on-site in the facility of the contractor. Works alongside contract engineers to perform various duties to incorporate new technologies, improve reliability, or extend the life of an aerospace vehicle's associated ground systems. Conducts work that involves requirements definition, research, technology development, test analysis, integration, and/or operation of aerospace and aeronautical flight systems in the overall development of flight vehicle programs or projects. Performs a full range of supervisory duties which includes assigning and evaluating work; recommending personnel actions; taking disciplinary actions; and identifying training needs and developing employees.   • Current Federal employees must meet qualifications, time in grade, and 90 days after competitive appointment requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level: managing projects for space flight vehicles, payloads, ground systems and/or facilities aerospace, including design and operational requirements processes and/or integration hardware/software; leading multi-disciplinary teams in the design, development, integration, test, evaluation, operation, and/or long-term maintenance of flight and ground systems; and coordinating, monitoring, performing and/or maintaining surveillance over a variety of engineering and integration efforts for current and future aerospace programs. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:

a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
