Duties

Leads three or more lifeguards in the performance of lifeguard and related swimming facility duties. Monitors activities within assigned swimming facility. Performs gate control duties. Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries. Cleans and maintains the swimming facility. Conducts swimming lessons following prescribed lesson plan. Participates in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, to administer basic first aid and CPR, and to provide water safety instruction for the activities and skill levels taught.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 level (or equivalent in other pay systems) in the federal service, in which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of qualifying experience includes: Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of experience and education as described above may be used as qualifying. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of a variety of lifesaving, first aid, CPR, water safety instruction, and associated techniques and procedures as would be acquired through previous experience. Knowledge of a variety of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks, and special tasks such as providing swimming lessons under specific instructions from the supervisor. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Demonstrated current physical ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants. Ability to orient lower graded employees, distribute/balance work assignments, and monitor work accomplishment. IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ABOVE APPLICANTS MUST ALSO MEET THE CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW: Applicants must submit the following certificates at the time of application: *******FAILURE TO SUBMIT THESE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS WILL RESULT IN AN INELIGIBLE RATING***** Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures. Lifeguards on coastal beaches must also have surf-rescue training specified in instructions. AND Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized basic first aid certification. AND Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification which includes adult, child, and infant procedures. Environmental Factors: Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Involves long periods of exposure to summer sun and chlorinated water. Other significant facts pertaining to this position are: Some physical exertion required in effecting a swimming rescue. Much of the time is spent sitting, standing, or walking; however, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, or reaching is required. A physical may be required. May provide advice and guidance (e.g., orientation, lesson plans, etc.) to lower grade lifeguards. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
