This position is assigned to the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) under the Chief of SPS at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. The RME Coordinator provides oversight in the development, implementation, coordination, maintenance and evaluation of critical and semi-critical medical devices within the RME Program. Reviews the acquisition of new equipment and advises using services of anticipated delivery dates.

Plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates all activities associated with a comprehensive total reusable medical equipment support operation.
Responsible to interact administratively with all services that are impacted by RME.
Investigates with the requesting service the need for any manufacturer and model specific SOPs required for the requested RME at the time the acquisition request for new equipment is received.
Monitors the acquisition of new equipment and advises using services of anticipated service dates.
Controls the release of new equipment.
If on-site training by the manufacturer's representative is needed, will arrange for such training.
Manages RME according to the Sterile Processing Service Directives.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
Education: One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
GS 7 grade level requirements
In order to qualify at the GS 7 grade level candidates must have1 year experience at the next lower grade level (GS 6) and be able to demonstrate the following GS 6 grade level KSAs (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
1. Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings.
2. Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination.
3. Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures.
4. Knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation.
5. Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures.
In addition to the KSAs listed above candidates must also be able to demonstrate the GS 7 grade level KSAs listed below.
1. Ability to interact with individuals of varying backgrounds in order to assess the needs of the department.
2. Ability to coordinate work in order to complete duties in an accurate and timely fashion.
3. Ability to interpret and apply sterile processing/infection prevention regulations and policies
4. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment.5. Ability to initiate and lead interdisciplinary groups in carrying out sterile processing functions.
The full performance level of this position is GS 6. The actual grade candidates can be selected for from this announcement is GS 7.

Physical Requirements: The work requires periods of intense concentration to coordinate and carry out administrative and logistical support activities for RMD, a number of which are complex in nature. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. Position also requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring carts and objects may be required. Occasionally, the incumbent may be required to assist in moving portable tables, chairs, or audio-visual equipment for use by the Service. Items carried typically are light objects and lifting of moderately heavy objects is not normally required. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on service needs.
