*This is not a Tenure Track position. Academic tenure is based upon performance and approval of the faculty and may be considered after initial or subsequent 3-year appointment period. Selectee may be offered an initial appointment with tenure if their academic credentials warrant such action. Performs faculty duties in the Center for Technical Intelligence Studies and Research (CTISR), Department of Engineering Physics, in the Graduate School of Engineering and Management at AFIT.

Duties

Conducts scholarly research in the field of computer science, radiometry, optics, sensor modeling, and infrared technologies. Develops and maintains software tools and writes code to establish capabilities as required by sponsors. Performs academic advising and research advising of graduate students. Participates in research that supports AFIT student coursework. Integrates new research tools and/or knowledge into courses offered by the Graduate School of Engineering Management. Conducts seminars and workshops and provides guest lectures. Provides technical support to graduate students and other researchers. Engages with other academic institutions, to ensure discoveries are shared broadly. Leads teams of researchers and developers in the execution of projects supported by external sponsors. Publishes results of research in peer reviewed journals, conferences, and workshops. Presents results of work to the community of interest in a variety of profession and academic forums. Maintains professional currency through training, conference attendance, and community working groups. Manages institute's intellectual property, to ensure the proper transfer of knowledge and technology occurs in a fair and equitable manner. Establishes and maintains sponsor research funding to support scholarly activities. Assists in the development and implantation of strategic vision for CTISR to include establishing new streams of sponsored thesis and doctoral topics. Participates as a trusted observer and advisor to externally sponsored developmental efforts. Leads the development of products, to include research, data, and software in support of sponsor needs and requirements. Manages budget, schedule and performance for developmental projects and drives research where needed to ensure the objectives of sponsors are met. Communicates with sponsors to meet reporting requirements and to develop execution strategies and requirements for capability development and research. Supports outreach efforts consistent with AFIT/ENP and CTISR priorities to include working with senior leaders to raise awareness of AFIT education programs and research capabilities. Leads working groups with sponsors and customers to facilitate the generation of requirements and prioritizes these requirements based on a matrix of customer funding and national priority. Performs other administrative functions as required to support Departmental, School, and Institute operations.

  • Shift work and emergency overtime may be required.
  • Employee must maintain current certifications.
  • Incumbent may be required to serve a one-year trial period.

  • Travel by military or commercial transportation to gather ideas for improving the curriculum, establish research contacts and agreements, conduct research, and present results of research may be required.
  • Initial appointment is under Schedule A appointing authority, Excepted Appointment Not-to-Exceed 366-days.
  • At the time of the expiration of the initial appointment an employee who adequately demonstrates professional competence can be extended in increments up to 3 years or for an indefinite period.
  • An initial appointment can be allowed to expire for an employee who does not adequately demonstrate professional competence.
  • The appointment cannot be converted to a permanent tenure in the competitive service.
  • This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service. This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.
  • All federal employees are required to have direct deposit.
  • Recruitment and/or retention incentives may or may not be used.
  • Permanent Change in Station (PCS) cost are not authorized.
  • This is a drug testing designated position.

Qualifications

Conditions of Employment Continued Term appointment may be extended to the maximum period allowed by law without further competition. NOTE: Current federal civilian employees may apply for this position and if selected, a break in service of at least 3 days may be required prior to appointment to this position. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree from an accredited institution in Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering Optical Engineering or any equivalent degree and a minimum of 3 years experience; interest in and presumptive potential for effective research, scholarship, and service. History of working collaboratively and professionally with students, faculty, staff, peers, senior leaders, office staff, and other constituents to set and achieve institutional goals. Possess the ability to communicate clearly and expertly (in English) in both verbal and written forms concerning academic, administrative, and technical subject matters. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
