Salary: $32 - 37 per hour

You will serve as a Journeyman Welder (Special) in the Structural Group of the Production Department of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will select the most effective welding sequence and welding procedure for weldment including fixturing, bolting, positioning, dogging, strong backing and other measures which would allow for the proper alignment during welding. You will utilize the proper assembly and connection of welding and cutting equipment to perform assigned tasks. You will work with metals in various conditions which require special welding techniques. You will ensure that the components are welded in accordance with the applicable specifications and engineering instructions. You will operate equipment such as, portable grinders, hand files, dial indicators and gauges to produce quality welds.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will lift and/or carry loads/items up to 50 pounds in weight, and occasionally lift over 50 pounds in weight.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to Inspect Inspecting weld joints for geometry and fit up with feeler gauges. Ensures the components are welded in accordance with the applicable specifications and engineering instructions. Operating complicated mechanical electrical and pneumatic equipment and instruments such as, dew point analyzers, purging dams, oxygen analyzers and manometers. Fabricating various components and sub-assemblies by using different types of welding processes and filler metals such as, manual, semi-automatic and automatic welding processes. Working with metals in various conditions requiring special welding techniques such as, quench and tempered steels and steels requiring subsequent heat treatment. Utilize approved methods and procedures under the welding specification requirements. Layout work from blueprints, specifications and oral instructions and maintain working equipment, make minor repairs and clean equipment.
