Archives Technician in Kansas City, Office of Research Services at the National Archives and Records Administration. Incumbent performs work that supports access to archival holdings and physical and intellectual control over records. The work encompasses a broad range of functions including processing, arranging, describing, digitizing, preserving archival records, providing reference services support, assistance to researchers, assistance to agency customers, and other customer services.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an ARCHIVES TECHNICIAN, you will:
Carry out tasks in support of providing and managing reproduction services in all formats.
Perform a variety of functions that support high-quality reference services in research areas, including screening of records and redaction of information and materials under Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) exemptions.
Provide input and feedback on reference needs and finding aids.
Independently evaluate the physical condition of records in the course of other duties and alerts supervisor or other designated staff to condition problems that limit access or threaten the safety of records.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-06, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Communicating with customers and responding to inquiries, verbally or in writing; AND
Using systems to locate items and/or using documentation to identify information relevant to a work assignment; AND
Applying regulations and policies to accomplish work assignments.
For the GS-05 grade level is defined as one year of experience at the GS-04 grade level, or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and which equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.Specialized experience:
Communicating to customer inquiries, verbally or in writing; AND
Experience filing records.
OR
EDUCATION: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school.
OR
COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
For the GS-06, you must have been at the GS-05 level for 52 weeks.
Advancement to positions up to GS-5: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-05 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.
