Duties

You will perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities. You will perform airfield firefighting by involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are. You will operate a variety of firefighting equipment. You will combat fire or rescue personnel on board ships where conditions create very difficult and dangerous situations.

Requirements

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States drivers license.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position is considered Key/Non-Combat Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support of the expeditionary requirements in other than combat or combat support situations.
  • This position requires employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
  • Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.

Qualifications

For GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; 2) Assisting with rescue operations; 3) Detecting, reducting, or eliminating potential fire hazards; 4) Operating fire communications equipment; 5) Controlling hazardous material incidents; and 6) Assisting in fire protection and prevention. Certifications Required: ***This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I/II, Airport Firefighter for Naval Station Whidbey Island only, HAZMAT Operations, CPR. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC, ProBoard or through a state that offers reciprocity to IFSAC or ProBoard. Copies of Certifications MUST be submitted with your application.*** For GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Assisting with rescue operations; 2) Using fire prevention equipment in eliminating potential fire hazards; 3) Performing initial and on-going patient assessment and physical exam; and 4) Ventilating smoke from burning structures effectively. Certifications Required: ***This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I and HAZMAT Awareness. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard or through a state that offers reciprocity to IFSAC or ProBoard. Copies of Certifications MUST be submitted with your application.*** For GS-03: Your resume must demonstrate at least six months of general work experience of military service that demonstrates your ability to follow directions and to read, understand, and retain a variety of instructions, regulations, and procedures and that otherwise demonstrates your ability to perform or learn to perform the duties of the position. Education

In lieu of general/specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

GS-05:
Successfully completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related field of study leading to a bachelor degree.
or
have a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. Your percentage of the required education plus your percentage of the required experience equals one hundred percent.

GS-4:
Completed a 2-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related field of study.
or
a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. Your percentage of the required education plus your percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent.

GS-3:
Completed firefighter training that was obtained as part of a high school curriculum.
or
completed one year of related education or firefighter training.
or
a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. Your percentage of the required education plus your percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent.
