About the Position: Incumbent will plan and lays out work, set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, shapers, planers, and grinders. Uses a variety of auxiliary machine tool attachments such as taper attachments, chucks, vise, thread adapter, etc. Lays out work from technical manuals, blueprints, drawings, and sketches.

Duties

Performs precision handwork to finish, fit, and assemble machined parts. Provides operators with any needed instruction and periodically check production pieces, making required adjustments to maintain quality. Set up and operates numerical/controlled (N/C) and/or conventional machine tools. Manufacture parts and complete items of equipment from raw stock (e.g., rough castings, bar stock) of different kinds of metal. Receives work assignments in the form of work orders or oral instruction accompanied by blueprints, sketches, drawings, model of the part of other work specifications. Operates machine tools to cut, drill, bore, tap, ream, shape, turn, mill, crind, hone and lap items.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Position requires the incumbent to successfully pass a pre-employment and annual physical.
  • The incumbent must obtain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) background check.

Perform tasks including operating machine tools to cut, drill, bore, tap, ream, shape, turn, mill, grind, hone, and lap items. I determine dimensional accuracy during the machining process through the use of measuring instruments such as inside, outside, and depth micrometers, surface gauges, height gauges, gauge blocks, screw pitch gauges, squares, and dial indicators. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Working Conditions - Works in a well lighted, heated, and ventilated shop with concrete floors. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noise, and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips; dust in lungs; cuts, bruises, and injuries to the hands from the use of machine and hand tools; skin irritation from contact with solvents, coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds; and subject to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required.
