About the Position: Position is located at US Army Forces Command, US Army Air Traffic Services Command, S4, Area Maintenance Facility, Fort Novosel, Alabama.

Duties

Perform repairs, calibrations, alignments, and overall sustainment of a variety of highly complex electronic equipment and air traffic control systems. Read and interpret complex circuit and schematic diagrams, tests, aligns and calibrates equipment to ensure maximum operational efficiency. Diagnose causes of unusual malfunctions in ground electronic navigational aids, landing, and communication systems which the FAA has recognized as meeting Category I and II complexity. Perform maintenance on components including printed circuit boards, modules, sub-assemblies, and assemblies of highly complex navigational aids, landing, and communications systems. Conduct on-the-job training when requested on all facets of equipment operations and maintenance of the system. Conduct extensive tests of repaired facilities to ensure concurrence with equipment specifications before returning equipment to operational status. Utilize in-depth electronic theory and intricate procedures to diagnose causes of system malfunctions or failures by making various tests. A thorough knowledge and skill is required to trace problems through a series of interfacing systems to determine which system has malfunctioned.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 25 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
  • Must be granted or be able to obtain and maintain a Maintenance Certification Authority on Air Traffic Control Navigational Aids, Landing Systems, and Communications Systems used in air traffic services operations within 12 months after employment.
  • May be required to work overtime on an emergency basis.

Specialized Experience: One-year specialized experience which includes (1) experience working as a technician, instructor, inspector, or mechanic (civilian or military) that shows applicable field experience with navigational aids, and air traffic control systems/equipment; (2) experience repairing and modifying equipment using knowledge of electrical and/or mechanical support, electronics, and installation systems; (3) experience applying electronic concepts and principles to identify and solve technical problems; and (4) experience using schematic diagrams, a variety of test equipment, and the application of appropriate electronic formulas involved in such duties as analysis, testing, diagnosing, correcting, tuning, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, constructing, developing and instructing on electronic Navigational Aids, Landing, and Communications systems/equipment, or similar functions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
