About the Position: Serves as a dispensing pharmacy technician in the pharmacy service of a medical treatment facility (MTF). Works under the general supervision of the pharmacy NCOIC, or pharmacist who outlines assignments in general terms, identifies priorities, and provides guidance on new policies and procedures. Incumbent works independently in outlying clinic or troop medical clinic areas and independently accomplishes work based on overall priorities.

Duties
Read and interpret prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form.
Determine proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data on Pharmacy's copy of prescription/order. After a final check by a pharmacist, dispenses medication in ambulatory care.
Rotate stock and checks expirations dates when delivering stock.
Dispense controlled substances in accordance with all policies and laws governing the receipt, storage and control of these drugs when called upon to do so.
Conduct monthly ward inspections of patient care areas.
Inventoris and replenish emergency carts without a second review.
Prepackage medication using safe work practices.
Operate automated dispensing equipment to accomplish dispensing function.
Apply safe handling when using hazardous materials including P and U listed waste and references the Material Safety Data Sheets.
Convey pharmacy policies and procedures to all customers when asked or needed.
Resolve routine patient care issues that are consistent with their responsibilities by adhering to medical center and service security policies.
Protect inventory from waste, fraud and diversion while working in a high security area.
Provide technical assistance and problem-solving support to all customers with a view towards accomplishing the service mission.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position may require incumbent to complete a tuberculosis test.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
- Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- Position is designated as Mission Essential. The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather or other emergency situations.
- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Interpreting, filling, and dispensing prescriptions; operate pharmacy dispensing equipment and information systems to process and fill prescriptions; communicate with patients and staff and direct questions to appropriate personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
OR
Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Pharmacology.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
Preferred but not required: Certified Pharmacy Technician.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
