These positions are located on the Colville National Forest at Colville WA and on the Wallowa Whitman NF at Baker City OR. The incumbent performs a variety of technical land survey duties related to locating, marking, and maintaining boundaries and corners for land management activities on National Forest System lands. Duties

Duties listed are at the full performance level, GS-09. Conducts simple traverse surveys using manual instruments including compass and chain. Searches, evaluates, and monuments public land corners. Records and calculates surveying data recognizing inconsistencies requiring supplemental information. Uses transit, theodolites, electronic distance measuring systems, (and/or other instruments) in the establishment of rights-of-way and land lines. Records data and makes sketches of topography and other physical features. May conduct p-line surveys or assist with road location or road design. May provide leadership and training for lower grade crew members as necessary.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note on Experience: Your resume must clearly document the following for each block of work experience; the beginning day, month and year the work assignment started and ended; the hours worked per week; position title, and series and grade if applicable; and description of duties performed. This information must be provided for each permanent, temporary or seasonal appointment/work assignment or volunteer work and should be clearly documented as a separate block of time. Incomplete, inaccurate or conflicting work history may not be credited for qualifications purposes. This can result in an applicant not being considered for the position. Specialized Experience Requirement: GS-05: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Collecting survey data using land survey instruments such as theodolites, total stations or global position systems; and/or recording and/or measuring areas through use of manual and electronic recording and/or measuring devices; and/or determining approximate locations to be mapped; and/or Applying skill in sketching and composing brief notes to complete assignments. -OR- A bachelor's degree or four (4) years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. -OR- An appropriate combination of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. GS-06: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level. Specialized experience is defined as two or more of the following: Conducting simple traverse surveys using land survey instruments; and/or Using transit, theodolites, electronic distance measuring systems, and/or other instruments in the establishment of rights-of-way and land lines; and/or Recording data and making sketches of topography and other physical features; and/or Applying knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles, and/or terminology of surveying to complete assignments. -OR- One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position. Examples of related fields include: surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology; -OR- An appropriate combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. GS-07: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level. Specialized experience is defined as two or more of the following: Operating and maintaining a variety of manual and electronic devices such as transits, theodolites, levels, distance measuring and positioning equipment, total stations or global position systems, or other instruments used on land surveys; and/or Independently measuring uncomplicated land surveys and resolving technical problems; and/or Compiling topographic maps, survey plats, and related information using appropriate equipment and techniques; and/or Applying knowledge of technical methods and procedures related to surveying to plan, schedule, organize, and execute limited projects. -OR- One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position. Examples of related fields include: surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology; -OR- An appropriate combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
