This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of technical land survey duties related to locating, marking, and maintaining boundaries and corners for land management and engineering activities on National Forest System lands.
Duties
Independently measures uncomplicated surveys and resolves technical problems. Conducts measurements from known points and between benchmarks of known elevation. Determines angles, distances, and differences in elevation between stations.
Operates and maintains instruments and equipment, e.g., transits, theodolites, levels, distance measuring and positioning equipment, and other instruments on land surveys.
Recognizes and reports errors, inconsistencies, and other deficiencies in technical data.
Assists in performing basic surveys, such as location, right-of-way, and property surveys for a segment or portion of a project.
Utilizes a variety of surveying related equipment and GPS equipment to perform surveys and prepare associated documents and reports.
Compiles topographic maps, survey plats, and related information using appropriate equipment and techniques to obtain and depict all details and information pertinent to the intended purpose.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.

GS-06: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-05 grade level.
Examples of specialized experience include: Technical work which provides knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles, and terminology of surveying to complete assignments. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector.
GS-06: There is no substitution of education for this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
