Duties

As a Student Trainee, you will actively participate in on-the-job training, progressively challenging assignments, and career enhancing opportunities that relate to the needs of the agency. Works in a warehouse environment. Physically de-packs, packs, or repacks material. Stacks and un-stacks material on pallets and conveyors. Physically loads/unloads heavy boxes, cartons, pallets, and other material to/from trucks, sea vans, roller lines, conveyors, etc. Operates equipment with basic start/stop controls.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: The ability to perform the tasks of this position under supervision, such as: packing, repacking and stacking material; operating basic start/stop equipment; manually or with the aid of hand trucks/dollies moves large, bulky, heavy containers from one area to another. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort Work requires bending, reaching, stretching, climbing and lifting. Does strenuous work while standing or walking. Frequently required to lift and carry boxes, sacks, and items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning materials, tools and equipment. Often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices. Working Conditions Works outside in all kinds of weather and inside in areas that may be unheated, drafty, varying temperatures, and noisy. Whether inside or outside, frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and form hard, damp floors or ground. Frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, bruises and sprains while repairing, positioning and moving materials or containers. Incumbent is required to comply with prescribed OSHA, DLA, and DLA Distribution safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hard hats, hard-toe shoes and protective clothing.
