Duties

Operate heavy load tractor-trailer vehicles. Estimate overhead and side clearances, turning radius, braking distance and safe distance to be maintained from other vehicles. Operate tractor-trailers and in-line trucks typically with a GVW of over 32,000 pounds as required. Read maps and judge road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route. Perform operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation. Operate vehicles on public roads in a full range of traffic conditions and at highway speeds to transport cargo and passengers.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) and requires the incumbent to complete a drug urinalysis testing prior to employment and randomly thereafter.
  • This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete a medical clearance examination prior to employment and may require an annual physical or medical surveillance examination.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) Tier 1 Background Investigation.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision which includes operating a heavy load tractor-trailer vehicle; operating gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of over 32,000 pounds; coupling/uncoupling truck tractor and trailers; and connecting lines and air brakes. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official. Work requires reaching, turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Associated duties require stooping, bending and climbing. Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds and heavier objects with assistance. Must be able to climb into tractor cab safely. Working Conditions: Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of traffic and weather on public roads (or equivalent) and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes and to the possibility of cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.
