Duties

Operate heavy load tractor-trailer vehicles. Estimate overhead and side clearances, turning radius, braking distance and safe distance to be maintained from other vehicles. Operate tractor-trailers and in-line trucks typically with a GVW of over 32,000 pounds as required. Read maps and judge road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route. Perform operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation. Operate vehicles on public roads in a full range of traffic conditions and at highway speeds to transport cargo and passengers.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) and requires the incumbent to complete a drug urinalysis testing prior to employment and randomly thereafter.
• This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete a medical clearance examination prior to employment and may require an annual physical or medical surveillance examination.
• This position requires the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) Tier 1 Background Investigation.

Working Conditions: Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of traffic and weather on public roads (or equivalent) and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes and to the possibility of cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.
