This a permanent, seasonal position with 18 pay periods of guaranteed full-time work and 8 pay periods in non-pay status. This position is located on the Tongass National Forest in Juneau, Alaska at the Admiralty Island National Monument. The incumbent is responsible for the development and scheduling of annual work plans and the execution of field operations relating to the unit trails program.

Duties

Responsible for developing and carrying out operating plans for trails maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction projects based on approved direction in land management plans. Implements trail, and/or wilderness and bridge construction and reconstruction projects. Participates in the identification and planning for future trail construction, reconstruction, maintenance, and restoration projects. Monitors and inspects contracted work to assure it meets the provisions of the contract.

Requirements

  • As a field going position working in brown or black bear habitat, this position is required to be firearm certified for personal and/or crew safety.

Qualifications

Provide course descriptions as necessary. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-7: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Planning and implementing the logistics required for completion of wilderness projects, such as trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, facilities maintenance, habitat restoration projects and/or wilderness management projects (recreation site inventories; solitude monitoring; invasive weed surveying/treatment); ensuring areas were used and administered in accordance with trail/recreation/wilderness management plans; conducting trail maintenance surveys and documenting trail work needs in data management systems and/or recording and entering wilderness management data (e.g. recreation site inventories; solitude monitoring; invasive weed surveys); managing a wilderness/recreation crew, providing planning, training and problem-solving support. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
