Duties

Leads three or more workers to accomplish trades and labor work. Passes instructions on to other workers. Ensures that needed tools and materials are available. Sees that all workers have enough work. Checks work in progress and completed work for compliance. Answers workers questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions and directions. Provides information to supervisor on status and progress of work. Examines, identifies and verifies a variety of materials, complete equipment items, technical components, parts, and commodities. Receives, checks, verifies, sorts and classifies materials and equipment by stock number, size, classification and condition. Uses technical manuals to identify and verify materials. Determines the correct condition code, classification, repairability or non-repairability of items and estimates economic feasibility or cost of repair. Initiates records to document receiving and processing discrepancies and material defects found during phases of examination. May operate forklifts with a capacity of lifting loads weighing up to 15,000 Ibs and related materials handling equipment to deliver, relocate, up-load, off-load, and move materials and equipment.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to instruct other workers on less complex work methods; refer to manuals as a means in answering questions related to the duties and responsibilities of the position; and adhere to all safety standards Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Performs moderate to heavy lifting (up to 40 pounds; if items weigh in excess of 40 pounds request assistance). Moves material by hand or by hand truck. Heavier material is moved by material handling equipment, or with the assistance of coworkers. Some effort may be involved in opening or sealing crates, cartons, drums, and other containers. Work requires standing and/or walking for lengthy periods of time and often requires bending, stooping pushing, and/or pulling material. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a warehouse environment or at outside work areas on a year-round basis. Subject to inclement weather when working in open storage areas or on docks. Incumbent may be subject to cuts, bruises, abrasions, and scrapes, when moving or handling equipment. Also subject to hazards involved in working in close proximity to moving equipment such as conveyors, tow-line systems, and material handling equipment. In addition, may also be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, solvents, and to high noise levels in mechanized work areas. When working with hazardous materials, may be subject to exposure from radiation, toxins, explosive hazards, or chemical fumes.
