This position is located in the Facilities Service Line at the Tomah VA Medical Center - a Level 3 Complexity VHA Facility. The position serves as a firefighter/driver-operator, providing fire protection and suppression services at 271 bed neuro-psychiatric VA Medical Center that is comprised of 52 buildings spanning 173 acres of land.
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Establishing water supply connections to hydrants, sprinkler systems, standpipes, and fire apparatus.
Loading, unloading, and advancing fire hose lines.
Manning fire attack lines and applying fire streams for fire control and extinguishment.
Applying water or other chemical agents to contain hazardous material releases.
Making forcible entry into locked and concealed areas, i.e. prying doors open, removing windows, etc.
Entering hazardous environments for rescue and fire extinguishment purposes.
Conducting salvage and overhaul work to protect undamaged property and preserve the scene for fire investigation.
Using protective firefighting equipment that includes self-contained breathing apparatus.
Using communications equipment i.e. portable radios.
Providing basic first aid, CPR and the use of an AED (automated external defibrillator) at medical emergencies that involve patients, employees, or members of the public on medical center grounds.
Responds to hazardous material incidents and takes defensive actions to protect nearby persons, the environment, or property from the effects of the release.
Safely driving and operating fire engine pumpers that have a wide range of GPM capacity.
Operating fire pumps and determining pump pressures for hose lines and sprinkler/standpipe systems.
Operating specialized fire alarm computers.
Conducts inspections, tests, maintenance and minor repairs of Fire Department equipment as part of the preventive maintenance program.
During other than normal administrative work hours, responds to investigate non-fire related utility or other type emergency calls within the Medical Center. If possible, makes minor repairs, i.e., reset circuit breakers, shut off water valves, etc. If necessary, initiates a call back of off-duty personnel to make repairs.
Performs other non-fire related duties in support of the Medical Center, i.e., removing persons from stalled elevators, jump-starting motorized vehicles, snow removal, and wash down air conditioning filters on HV AC equipment, and other PMI activities.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: 72hr shifts/week; 144hrs/pay period

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS (SCREEN-OUT) - Selective Placement Factors (SPF) have been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet both SPFs are ineligible for further consideration. Note: You must submit copies of certifications with your resume/application package to receive credit.
The SPFs for this position are:
IFSAC or Pro Board certification as Firefighter ll in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001
IFSAC or Pro Board certification as HAZMAT Operations in accordance with NFPA 1001.
IFSAC or Pro Board certification as Driver/Operator/Pumper.
Newly employed VA Firefighters must obtain IFSAC/Pro Board Fire Inspector I & II in accordance with NFPA 1031 within 24 months of employment. (Provide copy of your certification, if applicable)
DRIVERS LICENSE: Applicants must possess a current, valid state driver's license.
MAXIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT: This position requires a maximum entry age for an initial appointment; applicants cannot have reached their 37th birthday by the date of appointment. Applicants who have passed the designated entry age limit, but who have previously served as a federal employee in a covered position, may be eligible to re-enter the fire service provided that they: (1) meet all applicable qualifications for the position and (2) will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered and creditable Federal fire service by the time the firefighter reaches the age of 57.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
GS-6 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one years of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5) that demonstrated the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Such duties may include (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Applicants will be given a physical examination including a treadmill and agility test. Failure to pass these tests may be justification for disqualification. Periodic medical examinations following appointment may be required to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position. Firefighting hazards are recurring and require the use of specialized firefighting safety equipment, clothing, and procedures. The daily work environment is varied. Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in areas where it is dirty, dusty, noisy, or greasy, outside in hot and cold inclement/bad weather, and occasionally, in areas where there is danger of exposure to asbestos or lead based paint.
