The Industrial Hygienist is assigned to the Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (JBVAMC), VISN 12, Chicago, IL. The Industrial Hygienist
Is responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive Industrial Hygiene program at the JBVAMC. The Industrial Hygienist assumes a lead role in the development of industrial hygiene goals, policy, and procedural documentation for a facility.
Duties

This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-11. At the GS-9 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-11. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher-level work, and availability of funds.
Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Assumes a lead role in the development of industrial hygiene goals, policy, and procedural documentation for a facility
Plans and implements a comprehensive Industrial Hygiene program at the JBVAMC.
Coordinates industrial hygiene activities with regional representatives.
Supports the development of integrated planning for all facilities within the region.
Supports the development of facility industrial hygiene policies, programs, and procedural documentation.
Identifies and evaluates occupational health hazards found in industrial operations where processes are still relatively simple and literature on the hazards is, in most cases, readily available.
Assists in more complex inspections.
Conducts surveys of working conditions to determine the nature and magnitude of hazardous exposures and the effectiveness of existing control measures.
Applies appropriate sampling techniques and procedures and may oversee the work of contractors engaged to perform specific monitoring.
Participates with national-level committees to ensure that consistent and appropriate industrial hygiene measures are followed.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm.

Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. (TRANSRIPT REQUIRED); OR
A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included twelve (12) semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and eighteen (18) additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. (TRANSRIPT REQUIRED); OR
Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). (COPY OF CERTIIFCATION REQUIRED)
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement above, you must also meet one of the following additional educations and/or experience requirements. Select the statement below that best describes your experience and/or education to meet the specific qualification requirements for this Industrial Hygienist position at the GS-9 and/or GS-11 grade level. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-9: - In addition to meeting the basic education requirement above, applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the knowledge, skill and ability to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: has professional knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices; identifies and evaluates occupational health hazards found in industrial operations; understands and follows Government, National, and Local Standards, codes, policies in the Environment of Care, Emergency Management, Life Safety and Equipment Management; proficient in the techniques and procedures of related disciplines such as industrial hygiene, ergonomics, safety management and ventilation control to help solve problems; capable of assisting in more complex investigations involving a wide variety of conditions; recommends control measures or possible approaches to the control of harmful exposure.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE GS-9: (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) - Applicants must have successful completion of two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education is qualifying if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the Industrial Hygienist position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GS-9: (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)- Combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.
OR
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-11: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in the Federal Service. Qualifying specialized experience includes: Conducting industrial hygiene evaluations of a wide variety of operations and processes, within a medical facility/hospital setting, utilizing professional knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, principles and practices; interpreting and evaluating process and medical/hospital facility plans and specifications for occupational health hazard controls and compliance with applicable standards; planning, arranging, and conducting health surveys utilizing established techniques; utilizing industrial hygiene sampling instrumentation; and preparing and presenting training on a variety of industrial hygiene topics. (To be creditable, experience must be clearly detailed on your resume)

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE GS-11 (Transcript Required): Successful completion of three (3) full years of progressively higher graduate level education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, that provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this Industrial Hygienist position. One (1) year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, eighteen (18) semester hours should be considered an academic year of graduate study. Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (GS-11: Transcript Required): Equivalent combination of successfully completed related graduate level education and specialized experience as described above, to meet the total experience requirements for this position at the GS-11 level.
