Qualifications

Writing and Teaching Excellence Center. The Writing and Teaching Excellence Center (WTEC) supports students in all aspects of their academic and professional writing development, helping students to excel academically during their time at the Naval War College (NWC) and preparing students to serve at higher levels of command and staff afterwards. The WTEC also provides support for the teaching faculty of the NWC by offering workshops and webinars, individual consultations and formative assessments of teaching. Faculty of the WTEC curate and share resources on topics such as adult learning, leading discussions, inclusive teaching, and online learning. The WTEC also manages the College's annual essay competitions, coordinates with academic departments, and adapts programs to the College's unique curricula. Additionally, the Director will oversee and assist in the development of other functions common to Centers for Teaching and Learning to include instructional design, course development, and instructional technology. Responsibilities. General responsibilities for the Director include: developing, delivering, and assessing writing skills workshops; tutoring individual students; developing print and digital products addressing all aspects of the writing process; working collaboratively with other elements in the College's Learning Commons; identifying and sharing emerging trends, best practices, and research results related to student success issues; developing and overseeing assessment tools for writing and related skills; and assisting in the continued development of the Teaching Excellence program Additionally, the Director will: interview, recommend, train, supervise, and evaluate a hybrid workforce of professional staff and faculty; oversee relevant budgets; and develop and implement policies, procedures, and programs that reflect a sophisticated understanding of and engagement with learning differences and teaching styles. Qualifications. Essential qualifications include: a relevant terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D.) from an accredited institution in international relations, international political economy, comparative politics, political science, operations research, information operations, leadership studies, psychology, education, philosophy, economics, international security affairs, regional studies, war studies, history, or a related, relevant field; significant and sustained experience working directly with students as a writing skills support expert; demonstrated ability in designing, implementing, and evaluating writing support programs; and demonstrated leadership and management experience, including supervisory responsibilities. Desired qualifications include: advanced writing and communication skills; deep familiarity with best practices in student academic support and demonstrated adoption of these practices in strategies and programs; significant experience in managing programs, people, and budgets; evidence of exemplary skill and experience in public speaking and teaching adult learners in a college or university setting; and experience with enhancing student abilities in studying, oral/visual presentations, and related skill sets. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education
