This position is in the Internal Medicine Department within the Division of Clinical Services at Northern Navajo Medical Center in the Shiprock NM. The purpose of this position is to serve as a Nocturnist physician who works as a hospitalist on the night shift. The Nocturnist serves as a technical authority in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. The incumbent assumes responsibility for the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients.

Duties

Interviews and examines patients, reviews past medical history, and requests and/or performs diagnostic tests and examinations deemed necessary to obtain all appropriate information related to each case. Refers patients to appropriate contract medical or other government facilities, provides full clinical information for care and diagnostic procedures that cannot be adequately provided by local IHS facilities. Responds to acute emergency interventions, working closely in consultation with members of other medical departments as deemed appropriate by the clinical problem. Serves as an expert in the specialized area and assumes appropriate administrative duties as assigned by the supervisor. Performs other duties as assigned.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association(external link); Association of American Medical Colleges(external link); Liaison Committee on Medical Education(external link); Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association(external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.Note: An agency may waive the licensure requirement for research positions not involving direct patient care. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)(external link). A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association(external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)(external link). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. Applicants who meet the above Basic Requirements qualify for GS-11 (or equivalent) positions. Additional Requirements for Grades GS-12 and Above For GS-15 -- 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples of specialized experience in providing direct supervision, plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, clinical oversights to medical staff, evaluating staff for professional practice and clinical/technical functions, directs activities of the Internal Medicine medical staff. Maintain administrative matters and responsible for direct patient care. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR - Board Certification: Applicants applying in a specialty must meet one of the following as an approved agency-wide selective factor. This becomes part of the minimum requirements to qualify for the position. Board Certified in the Specialty to which the applicant is applying or Active Registrant of the Board in the Specialty to which the applicant is applying The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service. You must meet all qualification requirements within 5 days of the closing date of the announcement.
