The position is located in the Anesthesia Department, Division of Clinical Services, Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, NM. Serves as the Chief Physician of Anesthesiology and is responsible for the supervision of provision, planning, development, organization, integration, administration, and evaluation of the Anesthesia Department. Incumbent reports to the Clinical Director.

Duties

Administers various types of anesthetics to render patients insensitive to pain during operations and other procedures. Reviews the history of and examines patients to determine the degree of surgical risk; ascertains the type of pre-anesthetic sedation to be ordered. Positions patients on operating table in manner prescribed by the procedure to be done; assembles the necessary supplies and equipment to be used. Selects the anesthetic best adapted to the patient's condition; advises and consults with the surgeon regarding the patient's condition and the risks involved. Promotes training needs to staff and coordinates educational programs to interns and medical students. Checks patients for post-anesthesia complications; orders and administers indicated treatments. Responsible for the supervision of provision, planning, development, organization, integration, administration, and evaluation of the Anesthesia Department. Establishes policy and procedure manuals for anesthesiology services; prepares all required reports. Provides technical guidance and assistance to Nurse Anesthetists and other professional medical staff; is responsible for all clinically-related activities of the department. **Note: POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED - the vacancy will close when a selection is made. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association, (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. Additional Requirements for Grades GS-12 and Above GS-15: 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training within the specialty area of Anesthesiology. (e.g., a senior specialist with several years of experience beyond residency training) that demonstrates the ability to provide patient care of an extremely difficult and responsible level. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR - Board Certification: Applicants applying in a specialty must meet one of the following as an approved agency-wide selective factor. This becomes part of the minimum requirements to qualify for the position. Board Certified in the Specialty to which the applicant is applying or Active Registrant of the Board in the Specialty to which the applicant is applying. Managerial Abilities: This is a managerial position and candidates, in addition to the professional qualifications listed, must have demonstrated in their work experience or training, that they possess, or have potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision, as required for this position. Supervisory Competencies: Candidates should possess proficiency or the potential to develop proficiency in these supervisory competencies: Accountability Customer Service Decisiveness Flexibility Integrity/Honesty Oral Communication Problem Solving Written Communication The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service. **Note: POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED - the vacancy will close when a selection is made.
