This position is in the Neuroscience Service Line, with primary assignment to EEG Lab. The Neuroscience Service provides comprehensive neurological patient care with a variety of subspecialty services including both inpatient and outpatient electroencephalography (EEG). The EEG suite is located on the main floor of the medical center.
Duties
Duties include, however, not limited to:
The Medical Instrument Technician in the Neuroscience Service:
Provides clinical neurophysiology services to patients in the outpatient setting as well as the inpatient units.
Secures the confidence and cooperation of patients during procedures; explains procedures.
Executes procedures and positions patients for standard procedures.
Explains procedures and positions patients for a variety of non-standard procedures.
Describes procedures and position patients for difficult procedures.
Performs triage, rearrange patient priorities and supervise lower grade employees where available.
Receives/Interprets Physician's Requests.
Receives request or instructions for procedures; interpret requests or instructions from physician.
Receives assignments for which clear precedents exists.
Receives assignments which require application of standard procedures or that have special procedures identified and explained.
Independently interprets and carries out the requests made by physicians. Supervision is often administrative, and technologist must contact radiologist or EEG physician on technical issue.
Work Schedule: Approximately 4 hrs. per month on weekends and approximately On-Call one (1) week per month (Hours will be provided during interviews)

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels.
Licensure or Certification: Registration by the American Board of Registration of EEG, CNIM &EP Technologists (ABRET) or the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AEET) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide all aspects of Electroencephalography services.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures.
*2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
*4. Ability to manage and supervise employees.
*5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.

Physical Requirements: There is a combination of potentially extended periods of standing, walking, and lifting of items. The other physical demands that coincide with the duties of an echo technologist, such as performing portable examination in other areas of the hospital or travel to CBOC's. Heavy Lifting (45 lbs. and over); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (2-8 hours); Standing (2-8 hours); Repeated bending (up to 2 hour); Must possess emotional and mental stability.
