Visualization of all cardiac chambers, valves, and vessels, with appropriate structural and blood flow measurements, should be provided using a standardized protocol. In addition, the cardiac sonographer must have several important communications and basic safety-related skills.
The duties include but are not limited to:
Ability to produce diagnostic quality images and use proper ultrasound instrument operation in obtaining diagnostic images. Doppler frequency shift recordings using M-mode, two-dimensional, pulsed, and continuous wave Doppler spectral display, and color flow Doppler imaging.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology, pharmacology and anatomy related to specialized procedures involving the cardiovascular system. The incumbent must have knowledge of a variety of related disorders and disease, their effects on organs and methods of treatment.
The employee will possess the knowledge of cardiovascular response to incremental increased exercise, cardiac arrhythmias induced by exercise, and indications for the cessation of exercise testing due to life-threatening symptoms, cardiac arrhythmias, or blood pressure changes. The technologist must possess the ability to perform basic life support. (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) BLS required in this position.
Knowledge of normal echocardiographic findings and deviations produced by a wide variety of cardiovascular diseases. Ability to identify abnormal echocardiographic and Doppler velocities that are indicative of cardiovascular pathophysiology and accurately document cardiac ultrasound examinations.
Ability to perform complementary ultrasonic examinations (including noninvasive) transthoracic, (invasive) Bubble studies and contrast, stress, transesophageal echocardiography, and some vascular examinations.
Ability to adapt transducer positioning, instrument controls, and examination techniques to the individual patient being studied and the problem being evaluated including recognizing pertinent abnormalities and documenting abnormal findings.
