Duties
This position serves as a Range Technician for the West Desert District.
May operate, maintain, and inventory weed management equipment (tools, monitoring/mapping equipment, pesticide applicators, etc.).
Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, may safely mix, maintain, and calibrate herbicides and pesticides for use in rangeland environments.
Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, may performs routine and recurring weed management activities in accordance with all applicable plans, agreements, and regulations.
Ensures grazing permit and lease stipulations are complied with.
May conduct range studies for condition and trend, utilization, actual use, climatology and other information used for allotment evaluations.
May plan and conduct allotment inspections.
Assists with updating case files and automated documents.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Range Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: assisting with conservation, regulation, and use of public or federally controlled lands for grazing; conduct range research activities; work in the operation of a livestock ranch or perform range/forest fire control, prevention or suppression work.
OR Education:
To qualify based on education you must have four (4) years (120 semester hours) of education above high school, leading to a bachelor's degree with (a) with a major forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to the position or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
OR Combination of Education and Experience:
You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Undergraduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.
Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The incumbent carefully adheres to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.
