Duties

You will provide immediate oversight and direction to firefighters for an assigned shift and station. You will assign work based on priorities and difficulty of assignments and capabilities of employees; providing technical oversight; developing and rating employee’s performance. You will coordinate with officers at other stations and on other shifts concerning matters of work accomplishment, training, priorities, and procedures. You will counsel employees on work and basic terms of employment and benefits. Interviews candidates for subordinate positions. You will recommend appointments, promotions, retention, and reassignment of employees to higher-level supervisors. You will identify developmental and training needs of assigned personnel and arranges to meet those needs. You will resolve employee complaints, and refers more serious complaints and group grievances to supervisor for resolution. You will take corrective and/or adverse action for performance or conduct. You will ensure all subordinates are proficient in their expected roles relative to their position descriptions. You will complete various reports and requests for information and data with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness. You will maintain accurate records and performs employee timekeeping activities. You will perform Basic Life Support emergency medical services and responds to all types of emergencies on all types of Navy assets to include buildings, ships as well hazardous material, technical rescue and radiological emergencies. You will direct/deploy multiple fire/rescue companies in combating fires and managing other emergency situations. You will demonstrate a complete, thorough knowledge of fire ground operations, size up, tactics, and the correct deployment of emergency personnel and equipment. You will demonstrate organizational ability to properly and completely set up and manage an incident command post and Incident Management System as required to create an effective response organization.

  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final Secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

  • This position falls under respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
  • This position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
  • This position requires incumbent to pass annual firefighter physical exam in accordance with NFPA 1582.
  • Employee is required to work a 72-hour week on a 24 hour on, 24 hour off basis, which includes weekends and holidays. Subject to mandatory overtime and recall. Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
  • May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials teams.
  • Position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.

Qualifications

If external, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector, or if internal; GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Overseeing and directing day-to-day fire department operations which include driving and operating firefighting vehicles; 2) Fighting structural fires; 3) Performing emergency operations; and 4) Assisting in reducing and/or eliminating fire hazards. NOTE: This experience must be supported by your resume. ***This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications*** The incumbent must possess Fire Officer II, Fire Inspector I, Fire Instructor I, HAZMAT Incident Commander, Marine Firefighter, CPR, EVOC. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. Also requires National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT).
