The Chemotherapy and Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technician will perform clinical and administrative duties to support the preparation of sterile hazardous and non-hazardous parenteral products in accordance with applicable regulatory standards, VHA regulations, medical center policy, clinical protocols, and departmental standard operating policy and procedures (SOPPs).

The Medical Center is geographically positioned among one of the largest DoD active duty and military retiree populations in the United States. All branches of the military are represented in this region including Norfolk Naval Base, which is the world's largest Naval Station. The primary functions of the incumbent will include sterile compounding of hazardous and non-hazardous sterile products, quality assurance monitoring, inventory management, completion of ward inspections, administrative and record keeping actions, and customer service. Training of staff in sterile compounding processes and procedures will be a common duty. This will include aseptic technique, hand hygiene, donning sterile PPE, doffing of PPE, pharmaceutical mathematics and other training as needed. Secondary functions may include other inpatient pharmacy technician duties including repackaging of unit dose medications, and preparation and delivery of medications for Omnicell storage or other duties as assigned by the supervisor. The incumbent serves as a point of contact to the Hematology/Oncology Clinic, Infusion Clinic, and other acute care floors with respect to ensuring access to sterile compounded products under the supervision of a pharmacist. Work requires the highest degree of accuracy, skill, and experience. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience: None required. For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that total at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). OR National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT). Foreign Education: To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must be deemed at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. program by a private organization specializing in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, there are grade requirements below that also need to be meet. Pharmacy Technician, GS-07 Experience: Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: PTCB as a CPhT. OR NHA as a ExCPT. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of pharmacy technician principles, practices, concepts and theories providing for sound independent work. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process and input of prescriptions and medication orders or electronic equivalent. Ability to resolve pharmacy/medication issues with other members of the healthcare team, Veterans and external customers. Ability to train developmental pharmacy technicians and students. Ability to dispense medication or sterile products following all regulations, policies and procedures to ensure safe medication distribution. Ability to troubleshoot automated dispensing equipment (ADE) or technology platforms/databases. Preferred Experience: National Certification for Pharmacy Technicians; Direct knowledge of Inpatient Pharmacy processes; Understanding of sterile concepts; Compounding Chemotherapy IV medications in an expeditious and accurate manner. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-7. Physical Requirements: Physical requirements for this position are as follows: Light lifting, 15-25 pounds with occasional heavier lifting. Light carrying, 15-25 pounds with occasional heavier carrying. Straight pulling (up to 2 hours). Pushing (up to 2 hours). Reaching above shoulder. Use of fingers. Repeated bending. Walking (up to 8 hours). Standing (up to 8 hours). Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as needed.
