This position is located in the Medical Records Department at Chinle Service Unit, Chinle, Arizona. This position works in a hybrid (paper/electronic) medical record environment, alternating between abstracting the coding pertinent outpatient medical data from the record into the Resource Patient Management System(RPMS) and analyzing medical data entered by the clinician into the Electronic Health Record(EHR).
Duties
THIS POSITION IS BEING ANNOUNCED CONCURRENTLY WITH ANNOUNCEMENT: IHS-24-CH-12345140-ESEP/MP FOR CANDIDATES AT THE GS-04/05 LEVEL. APPLICANTS MUST APPLY SEPARATELY TO EACH ANNOUNCEMENT TO BE CONSIDERED.
Assigns and sequences International Classification of Disease(ICD). Current Procedural Terminology(CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System(HCPCS), Current Dental Terminology(CDT), Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM) codes to Diagnosis and procedures from documentation information.
Assures diagnostic and procedural terminology used is consistent with currently acceptable medical nomenclature.
Makes the final determination that the health record is complete, accurate and reflects data to justify the diagnosis and treatment without infringing on decisions concerning a physician's clinical judgement.
Data Entry.
Generates a variety of reports to review, identify, correct errors, discrepancies, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:
GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level.
Specialized experience examples: knowledge of coding terminology, abstracting data from medical record, performing chart analysis and following well-established medical record procedures.
GS-07: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level.
Specialized experience examples: independently performing technical and specialized functions for an outpatient and inpatient medical record, performing quality assurance of medical records and coding diagnostic and procedural information.
Education:
GS-06/07: Not generally required.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
