This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Bldg. 82502 Ft. Huachuca, Az. Working in a maintenance bay and outside on equipment. Work hours 0800 to 1630.
Duties
Determine causes of mechanical operating problems, trace and locate defects, and make repairs to heavy mobile equipment and vehicles.
Complete both minor and major repairs in accordance with approved work orders, diagnosing trouble to the extent necessary to satisfactorily complete repairs.
Performs diagnostics, disassembles, repairs and load tests; visually checks for wear, leaks, scoring, pitting, metal debris, cracks, rust, and oil condition.
Reassembles Vehicles and equipment, performs functional test as appropriate to ensure serviceability.
Performs scheduled and un-scheduled maintenance repairs on wheeled vehicle and ground support equipment fleet.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must obtain a valid State Class A Commercial Driver's License with endorsements as required within 8 months, and a Government Motor Vehicle Operators Identification Card and maintain.
- Incumbent will be required to pass a pre-employment physical. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs from the floor to a cart for transport, then put on a shelf or workbench.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a T-3 Secret Clearance.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision: identifying mechanical operating problems on heavy earth moving mobile equipment; repairing and overhauling many types of heavy mobile equipment with complex state-of-the-art electrical and electronic systems; and utilizing electronic diagnostic equipment to identify mechanical issues. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods to include frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Works on the top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes.
WORKING CONDITIONS Works both inside and outside. Frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noises; exposed to irritation or discomfort from duct, heat, fumes, and from hard, damp floors; exposed to the possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, and strains; receives burns and skin irritations from acid, fluids, and lubricants.
