The position will support the Natural Resource/Land Management program within the park. Terrestrial and aquatic species monitoring, inventory and research is conducted at the park. Implementing natural resource management projects and field research will be accomplished by conducting standardized procedures to collect and organize field data.
Duties
The Biological Science Technician serves in Natural Resource/Land Management program of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MISS), a partnership based national park in Minnesota. Initially, the incumbent will be the MISS staff person most closely assisting with the beaver study currently ongoing with the University of Minnesota and MISS. This person will help with deploying and retrieving field cameras, running vegetation transects looking at browse in floodplain forests and doing some camera trap data analyses as directed by the PhD student and University of Minnesota professor leading the project. The incumbent will also participate in a variety of other terrestrial and aquatic species research at the park. They will implement established natural resource management projects and field research by following instructions and standardized procedures to collect and organize field data and ensure adequate quality control off field data collected samples. Recording all data collected and providing preliminary assessment and classification of the information will be expected. They will provide technical information, ensure quality control, and solve logistical or operational problems within the scope of their knowledge and authority. Providing advice, assistance and training to support the park's volunteer programs by offering opportunities for volunteers to participate in natural resource wildlife, bird and insect field research as needs or interests dictate is expected.
Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work (be in pay status) during the season, February through mid-January, which is approximately eleven (11) months, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year (mid-January through late-January).
Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one or all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience for Biological Science Technician is experience which demonstrates that you have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work involving biological science support such as: collecting, analyzing and processing samples, performing laboratory work, assisting in the management of field projects, collecting, processing and managing field data, and performing habitat restoration through management of exotics and/or native planting. Use statistical methods and procedures to perform testing of field data collected. Installs, operates, and maintains resource management equipment (tools, sampling, and monitoring, photographic, and laboratory equipment) prepares graphs, charts, and illustrations for reports and technical publications relating to plant management activities. Assist in the development of improved methods of controlling weeds and plant diseases or other related work etc. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one (1) full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. NOTE: Graduate education meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
