Duties

Major duties for the position include (but are not limited to): Assemble highly complex instrument sets including, but not limited to, open heart, major orthopedic total joint, cardiovascular, craniotomy and complex endoscopic instrumentation. Processes all complex endoscopic instrumentation to include those medical devices used in the gastroenterology laboratory, bronchoscopy laboratory, urology and operating room. Review manufacturer guidelines to ensure the correct methods and parameters are followed when cleaning, decontaminating and sterilizing Reusable Medical Equipment (RME). Troubleshoot and analyze mechanical failures and makes necessary adjustments to complex decontamination and sterilization equipment, as well as interpret alarm conditions which may occur while operating the equipment. Informs management and healthcare staff when cleaning and processing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or instruction for use have been changed or updated to assure the changes have been validated to meet all guidelines. Collect and transport Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) from more than 15 locations throughout the facility three (3) times a day. Conduct inventory of supplies needed for our production as well as end users. Uses seasoned judgment to ensure minimum potential for damage to equipment. Work Schedule: Tour will be one of the following, based on the needs of the service: Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm, 11:30am - 8:00pm, 3:00 pm - 11:00pm, 8:00 pm - 6:00am Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR Education: One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-7: Experience. In addition to the basic requirements, one year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Detailed knowledge of complex surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings. Ability to assemble specialty operating room and clinic instrument sets. In-depth knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in order to convey information and thoughts to others. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Preferred Experience: Ability to function in all areas of Sterile Processing Services, Decontamination, Preparation/sterilization and High Level Disinfection. Operate all mechanical equipment required for reprocessing reusable medical devices. Knowledge in reprocessing complex reusable medical devices such as Endoscopes, Robotics, etc... References: VA Handbook 5005/83, Part II, Appendix G-47 Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) Qualification Standard. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is a GS-7 . Physical Requirements: May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment. Work Environment: Work is performed RMD in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that requires normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. However, the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situations.
