The Supervisory Medical Supply Technician in the Sterile Processing Service Line is located in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Duties

Major Duties:
The employee is under the supervision of the Assistant Chief (Sterile Processing).
The Assistant Chief will assign work with standing instructions on objectives, priorities, and deadlines, and provides guidance for unusually involved situations.
The employee will work as team member with other Medical Supply Technicians of various experience to carry out the daily work utilizing the written standard operating procedures and/or manufactures written instructions in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted/standard practices.
The Assistant Chief evaluates completed work from an overall standpoint in terms of effectiveness in meeting the requirements of the Operating Room, Clinics, and the patient.
Meets the needs of customers while supporting Veterans Affairs (VA ) missions.
Consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.
Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
Performs other duties assigned.
Physical Demands: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation) and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility. The MST (Developmental Level) may be required to work In areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation.
Preferred Certifications in Sterile Processing and Endoscope Processing
Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 11:30a.m.-8:00p.m.; subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Qualifications
Specialized Experience: MUST possess one (1) full year of specialized experience equipped with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this Supervisory Medical Supply Technician position? To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS 7) in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker. In addition to the experience referenced above for this grade level you may also possess the following specialized experience: reprocessing reusable medical equipment such as decontamination, preparation and high level disinfection; knowledge and recognition of surgical, dental instrumentation, flexible endoscopes; multitask and work in a fast pace environment; detailed oriented; basic computer skills in navigating Microsoft office and Microsoft Outlook. Education: MUST have successfully completed one and a half years (18 months) of graduate education or a Master's degree to meet the requirements with course work that is directly related to the work of this position sterilizing medical supplies and instruments, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to the position occupation or an internship that is directly related to the work of this position as a Supervisor Medical Supply Technician. Some areas that may be related to this field are surgical nursing, nursing, medical technology, medicine, clinical laboratory, biological sciences, microbiology, etc. (Transcript Required)

Combination of Education and Experience: MUST possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Work Environment: On a regular and recurring basis, the employee alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled clean environment. The employee wears special clothing, hair covers, personal protective equipment and shoe covers that can be uncomfortably warm. The employee uses insulated gloves to remove carts from sterilizers. The employee is subject to bums from accidentally touching hot items. The hazards of working around minute quantities of sterilizing gasses are unknown. The employee often works around body fluids, mucous, excretions and bits of tissue, some of which may be foul smelling. Strong, unpleasant odors are encountered while decontaminating bloody or grossly contaminated instrumentation or reusable medical equipment. The work area is noisy due to the clatter of metal instruments, rumbling of carts and operation of pre- sterilizing equipment.
