About the Position: As the Department of Defense's lead laboratory for the development of medical countermeasures against chemical, biochemical, and other acute non-kinetic battlefield injuries, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense (USAMRICD) is increasingly called upon to provide expertise and consultative services related to medical chemical defense research and to the medical management of chemical casualties.

Duties

Serves as a principal investigator leading teams that conduct basic and applied research to develop medical solutions for chemical, biochemical, and other acute non-kinetic battlefield injuries. Utilizing in vitro, ex vivo, and/or in vivo models, our research teams carry out research endeavors from concept to definitive pre-clinical studies. These research efforts culminate in the development of medical countermeasures including both therapeutics and devices, as well as knowledge products and methodologies that advance medical treatments . Research projects are diverse and take a multi-disciplinary teaming approach to cover scientific fields such as toxicology, neuroscience, pharmacology, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, animal behavior, physiology, and/or cell biology,

Requirements

  • One-year probationary period may be required.
  • Secret Security clearance is required.
  • This position requires you to submit a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report (OGE450) upon entry, and annually thereafter.
  • Position requires certification in the Chemical Personnel Reliability Program (CPRP), IAW AR 50-6. Enrollment in the CPRP is a condition of employment, which requires random drug testing and medical evaluation IAW AR 50-6.
  • Position requires certification in the Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP), IAW AR 190-13. Enrollment in the CPRP which requires personnel, security, medical, and law enforcement records checks, and random drug testing.
  • Acquisition Certification. Foundational Career Level Certification or Contracting Professional Certification must be met within 3 years.
  • TDY is required 10% of the time.
  • Physical is required.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and specialized experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Education Requirement for Biologist (0401): A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Education Requirement for Toxicologist (0415): Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology. Basic Education Requirement for Physical Scientist (1301): A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to one of the majors, as shown in A above, that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Education Requirement for Chemist (1320): A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education Basic Education Requirement for Psychologist (0180): Degree: Bachelor's Degree (or higher degree) in a major or equivalent in psychology. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the specialized experience requirements listed below: One year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent grade pay band in the federal service which includes work that involves: SPECIALIZE EXPERIENCE: (1) Conducting basic and applied research projects using in vivo and/or in vitro models to achieve milestones and produce deliverables; (2) Prepares research and budget proposals for submission to funding opportunities; AND (3) Presents and publishes findings in scientific forums, journals, and/or governmental publications.

Education
