This position is organizationally aligned under the Clinical Directorate Mental Health at the Jesse Brown VA (JBVA), Chicago, IL. The primary purpose of this position is to serves as a content matter resource for community-based suicide prevention and facilitates integration of suicide prevention education throughout the community.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include but may not be limited to: Development of suicide prevention policies or programs by serving as a leader in organizing community partners and coalitions. Subject matter expert (SME) in communication, with a specific focus on suicide prevention. Primary point of contact for the dissemination of information related to prevent suicide. Facilitate planning, direction, and timely execution of policy, training, education, research and evaluation, and/or data and surveillance projects/programs pertaining to the prevention of suicide. Researches communication requirements to enhance the development of suicide prevention. Work Schedule: Fulltime; Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 4:30pm; May be required to work during off hours as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS To apply for this position, you must have the following qualifications: English Language Proficiency - In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. AND A bachelor's degree or 4 years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in behavioral or social science or a related discipline appropriate to this position. OR Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR Four (4) years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. AND Applicants must meet both the positive education qualifications requirements above AND the below qualifications. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of Specialized Experience that includes but is not limited to: Develop information that ensured public understanding of community-based suicide prevention programs.; Provides a variety of suicide prevention training in the community.; Develops short- and long-term goals and strategies while collaborating with coalitions and community organizations. (Resume(s) must clearly support the duties and experience required for this position. We will not make assumptions regarding experience.) -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position and been obtained at an accredited college or university. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (beyond 18 semester hours) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of this position. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Oral CommunicationOrganizational AwarenessPlanning and EvaluatingTeaching Others IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary and does not require any special physical effort. Work will require walking and standing in conjunction with travel and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the work site. Employee may carry light items such as papers, books, and portable computer requirement or driving a motor vehicle relative to attendance at meetings. The work often requires long hours to meet project deadlines and to devise corrective action and solutions to unexpected technical and/or management crises resulting in sometimes highly stressful work situations.
